When optical and photographic systems where invented, stereoscopes where very popular. At the beginning of the 20th century, peoples infatuation for this instrument was caracteristical of the enthousiasm surrounding exotic pictures or famous touristic sites. A stereoscope stages the scenery in miniature, with depth and relief, putting reality within easy reach.
Here, the stereoscope underlines Janice and Rémi’s fascination for stereotype. For instance the swiss alps wooden chalet has become the fantasmatic form of housing of mountainous regions, the swiss cuckoo being it’s reduced form. These « cuckoo houses » strengthen our impression of being in the mountains and adds « relief to relief ».
